What does it mean to be a trustee?
The board is made up of non-paid trustees who are accountable to the Consortium’s members. Our trustees are mostly representatives from the Consortium’s member organisations, however 25% of the board may represent themselves as LGB or T individuals.
They meet regularly throughout the year and also work outside of these meetings.
The board are responsible for developing our aims, objectives and goals in accordance with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines. More specifically the board is responsible for:
- our vision, mission and values
- strategy
- policies
- governance
- compliance with the law (e.g. employment procedures)
- proper fiscal oversight
- respecting the role of staff and volunteers
- effective board performance
- promoting the Consortium
- selecting and supporting the chief executive
Can I be on the board?
The Consortium looks for committed people with a range of skills, knowledge and experience to make up our board.
You should:
- be motivated to support the needs of LGBT communities and the organisations that support them, as well as advocating your own areas of interest.
- have expertise in areas relating to the Consortium’s work.
- positively identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered (or have personal empathy for these groups).
- be strongly committed to our vision, mission, values.
- understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of voluntary sector organisations.
- be able to work effectively as part of a team.
- be willing to contribute proactively to discussions.
- have skills around setting targets, monitoring performance and strategic thinking.
- be willing to devote time and effort to your duties, including attendance at meetings.
